Inlays and onlays are a restorative dental solution. We recommend inlays and onlays as an alternative solution to dental fillings. Inlay and onlay dental solutions are used to treat teeth with cavities or gaps.
What is Inlay and Onlay Restoration?
An inlay is considered as an indirect filling. It can be made of gold, porcelain or composite resin. The inlay is filled in the cavity and cemented into position. The inlay technique is unique because the restoration occurs outside of the mouth by utilizing dental impressions prepared before.
Onlay, similar to inlay, includes a replacement for a tooth cusp by covering the area where the cusp would be placed.
Apple Dental’s Inlay and Onlay Procedure
An inlay or onlay procedure takes two dental visits to complete.
On your first dental visit, we assess your tooth and suggest the best solution according to the damage extent. An inlay or onlay restoration is not always the best solution for cavities. Once it is decided that this dental restoration process is the best option for you, we begin the process. An impression of the tooth is taken on a mold, from where the inlay or onlay is crafted. The best material will be decided for the inlay or onlay. For the back molars, which are out of sight, gold is the best option, otherwise porcelain or resin are the alternatives. A temporary inlay or onlay is insert in your mouth to protect the tooth.
Within a week, the inlay or onlay is ready and you are called for your second dental visit. The temporary fitting is removed and the inlay or onlay created specifically for you is placed in. The inlay may be smoothened to ensure it fits comfortably. The inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth to permanently set it in.
Benefits of Inlay and Onlay Restoration
There are certain benefits to this method that makes it better than the other options available.
- Superior Fit:
The usual filling process requires the dentist to drill and carefully shape the tooth for the filling to fit in. However, inlays and onlays preserve the tooth as it is. They are made for a perfect fit of the cavity.
Inlay restorations are sealed better, this prevents any instance of bacteria.
- Right Shade:
Inlays and onlays are prepared according to the color of your teeth so it does not stand out. Additionally, the material is not stained easily.
- Strong Bond:
Traditional composite resin filling may wear over time, making it necessary for you to visit the dentist again. Inlays and onlays are constructed to be strong, resistant and durable. Once cemented in, it will stay there.
