Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth made of acrylic or porcelain and resemble your natural teeth and gums. They are used to replace all or some missing teeth, and serve the same functions as natural teeth. Here is everything you need to know about dentures before you walk into Apple Dental for a fitting.
What do dentures do?
Before you understand what dentures do, you need to know about the two main types of dentures available at Apple Dental. They are Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures. Complete dentures replace all the teeth and are shaped like a horseshoe to fit into the palate of the mouth and below the tongue. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth and help retain the position and structure of the adjacent teeth.
Dentures are made of acrylic with a base that resembles the natural human gums. They act as a replacement for your teeth and serve all the functions that natural teeth serve. They look and act as natural teeth to restore normal chewing functions in the mouth as well as maintain a natural smile.
What is the procedure for getting dentures?
At Apple Dental, we provide a range of tooth restoration options for patients to choose from and this applies to dentures as well. Dentures of different types can be fit based on the patient’s requirements and dental condition. Here’s how it is done.
Conventional complete dentures
These types of dentures are fit only after all the teeth have been extracted and all the tissues have been healed. This healing process may take several weeks and the patient may have to remain without teeth for that period. Once fit, conventional complete dentures do not require realignment as all the tissues will have healed and assumed a permanent position and structure.
Immediate complete dentures
Immediate complete dentures are fit immediately after the extraction of the teeth occurs and before the tissues have fully healed. These dentures may require realignment as the healing tissues may change in alignment and structure. At Apple Dental, the dentures are custom made in a laboratory after taking prior impressions of the teeth and gums to replicate it perfectly. Immediate dentures are preferred by most of our patients as they do not have to remain without teeth at any point of time.
Partial dentures are a removable alternative to bridges as they attach to adjacent teeth to replace the missing teeth in between. Some teeth may require crowns to be placed on them to serve as suitable anchors for the partial dentures.
How long do dentures last?
Dentures last for many years with normal wear and tear. Minor remodeling, rebasing and realigning work may need to be performed on your dentures to ensure a perfect fit as your mouth changes in shape due to aging and other factors. Apple Dental recommends brushing dentures properly to remove food debris and prevent staining.
To get the most out of your dentures, ensure you get them fit and made to fit at Apple Dental and visit your dentist at Apple Dental at least once a year to the most optimum fit.
