Can’t flash the perfect smile because you have a missing tooth? When you lose a tooth, you have a gap in your dental structure. This gap causes teeth from both sides of the gap to encroach, shift or rotate into the empty space left by the missing tooth. This can lead to a bad smile, difficulty in taking a bite or problems with chewing food.
For such problems, at Apple Dental, we provide our customers with bridgework to solve this very problem. A bridge is a combination of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap. The bridge is cemented along with the natural teeth or implants at the sides of the gap. These teeth are called abutments and are anchors for the bridge. The replacement tooth, known as pontic, is attached to the crowns which cover the abutments.
Our bridgework solves the problem of the open gap and brings you back your smile and that perfect bite.
Types of Dental Bridge
There are three types of dental bridgeworks you can avail of a dental service in Edmonton.
A traditional bridge is the method we detailed above. It involves creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the gap. Traditional bridges are made of porcelain fused to either metal or ceramics.
Cantilever bridges are not used by most dental services in Edmonton. Its general purpose is only when the abutment teeth are present on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. Cantilever bridges aren’t recommended as they may put too much strain on the adjunct teeth and damage them.
Also known as resin bonded bridge, this bridgework is made of porcelain fused to metal or plastic and are supported by a framework made of metal or porcelain.
Getting a Dental Bridge at Apple Dental
When you first visit our dentists in Edmonton, we assess the amount of work that needs to be done. Each customer has a different requirement because their dental structure is unique. This is key for us to get the bridgework right early on.
We must first get the abutment teeth prepared. Only after that do we take an impression of your teeth on a mold that serves as a model. When that is done, we fit in a temporary bridge to protect the exposed gums and teeth while the bridge is being made.
Once the bridge is prepared, we will call you for the second visit. During this, the temporary bridge will be removed and the new one will be inserted. We will thoroughly ensure that it fits well and comfortably.
Further visits may be required to check the fit of the framework.
Taking care of a Dental Bridge
There is no special care required for a dental bridgework apart from you taking care of your teeth.
