Our family dentists at Apple Dental Care in Edmonton offer dental inlays and onlays, a treatment designed to restore, protect and strengthen damaged and decayed teeth.
What is inlay and onlay treatment?
More conservative than a crown, inlays and onlays are methods of restoring healthy tooth structure after decay or damage. Inlays and onlays are considered as indirect fillings made of porcelain or composite resin.
Unlike a standard filling that is done in our office, both are made in a laboratory and the cemented or bonded to the surface of the tooth. Also unlike standard fillings, inlays and onlays do not weaken the tooth structure, but actually strengthen it.
An inlay is done when the tooth structure replaced is within the cusp tips of the tooth. If the damage is more extensive and the new structure covers the entire chewing surface, including one or more tooth cusps, the procedure is called an onlay.
What is the inlay and onlay procedure?
An inlay or onlay procedure takes one dental visit to complete.
During your dental visit, we assess your tooth and suggest the best solution according to the extent of damage.
An impression of the tooth is taken and an inlay or onlay is crafted and fitted into place. We may smooth the inlay or onlay to fit comfortably. Then, it is bonded to the tooth to permanently set it.
What are the benefits of inlays and onlays?
- Durability: Dental inlays and onlays are composed of strong, durable material.
- Strengthen Teeth: Unlike traditional fillings, dental inlays and onlays strengthen the tooth it adheres to.
- Longevity: Dental inlays and onlays prolong tooth life and may prevent need for future dental treatment of a decayed tooth.
